About Upper Potomac Music Weekends

Located in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the weekend programs of Upper Potomac Music Weekends give students an opportunity to share tunes and techniques, and to learn from some of the finest teachers available in a variety of traditions on many instruments.

All weekend workshops take place in the relaxed, retreat setting of the Shepherd University Student Center and surrounding historic buildings in scenic Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Each program offers a slightly different flavor or theme to appeal to a wide range of students.

Our programs for the 2012-13 season are:

 Fall Mini-Sessions

These programs bring some well-established artists as well as some of the brightest sparks of the next generation for a series of Friday night concert and all day Saturday workshops with an evening jam session for a wide variety of instruments.

  • September 7-8: The Bee Eaters with Bruce Molsky
    Old-time Music and it’s next incarnation!
  • October 12-13: Notorious
    Contra Dance Musicians Bootcamp!
  • November 16-17: Irish Session Lads Cleek Shrey, Stuart Jackson and Sean McComiskey with some fresh insights in traditional Irish music! (To be confirmed)

 Fiddle Retreat - January 4-6, 2013

Workshops, Classes, Jam Sessions and a Contra Dance for Fiddlers and those who play with them. A variety of styles are presented by some of the region’s finest fiddle teachers with an emphasis on dance fiddle styles including Cape Breton, Irish, New England and Scandinavian. 2013 teachers are Kimberley Fraser, a Special Guest Fiddler, David Kaynor, along with 5 of our local favorites: Cabaret Sauvignon (Andrea Hoag, Paul Oorts, Karen Ashbrook and Dave Wiesler), and Joe Herrmann.

 Pipers Weekend - January 18-20, 2013

Weekend retreat featuring classes, concerts, sessions and private tutorials for a variety of bellows-blown bagpipes, flute and mixed instruments. Staff are: EJ Jones, Ivan Goff, Matt & Shannon Heaton, Timothy Cummings, and Ian Lawther. Classes at all levels of ability; high-quality rental Scottish smallpipes are available for new pipers who wish to try them for the weekend.

 Spring Music Weekend - March 8-10, 2013

Workshops, classes, concerts and jam sessions for hammered dulcimer, fiddle and mixed instruments with special guest instructors including dulcimer players Jeanean Martin, Randy Marchany plus 2 paired dulcimer and fiddle tracks with Ken Kolodner and old-time fiddler Joe Herrmann and New England Dance band masters Bill Spence and George Wilson.
